2021 Brian Pearson Scholarship Recipients Chosen

Ames and Bondurant Students Making an Impact

(May 27, 2021) – Each year the Iowa Sports Foundation and Iowa Games chooses two recipients to receive the distinguished Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship, one male and one female. The scholarship, sponsored by the Orr, Kenyon and Skinner families, is to honor former Iowa State University Basketball Player, Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in 1997. This year’s recipients are Isaac Ensminger of Bondurant-Farrar High School and Arunadee Fernando of Ames High School.

Ensminger and Fernando were chosen for their character and ability to demonstrate citizenship, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Scholarship winners are also students who are accomplished in school, activities and make a positive impact in the community.

Ensminger, who graduates this month, is planning to attend Iowa State University this fall. He has participated in the Iowa Games Net Fest tournament in the past. Isaac is an active member of the Bondurant community, committing his volunteering, primarily with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Ensminger excels academically as well as playing on the varsity soccer team.

Fernando will also graduate this month and attend Iowa State University in the fall. She has competed in tennis at the Summer Iowa Games as a youth. As a student-athlete, Arunadee is heavily involved in her school and community. She spends much of her time with various clubs and activities, all while maintaining her status as a varsity tennis player and award-winning scholar.

Eligible applicants for the scholarship were students finishing their junior or senior year in 2020-2021 and have participated or volunteered in an Iowa Sports Foundation event. The $1,000 scholarship is to be used to pursue post high school education. The winners will also be recognized in the 2021 Summer Iowa Games Opening Ceremony, to be broadcast virtual on Friday, July 30.
