AARP NATIONAL SPELLING BEE OFFERS TWO-DAY MENTAL FITNESS CHALLENGE
If you still remember that word you missed in the 6th grade spelling bee, AARP offers a shot at redemption: The AARP National Spelling Bee will be held Aug. 10-11, 2012 at Little America Hotel and Resort in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Spellers must be at least 50 years old on the day of the bee in order to compete. Registration is open at www.aarp.org/spellingbee through Aug. 6. "A group of AARP members created the AARP National Spelling Bee 17 years ago as a fun way to challenge their peers," AARP Wyoming Director Tim Summers said. "Some spellers call themselves 'word nerds' and others say they come just to meet other like-minded people."

AARP Kansas Opposes Westar Settlement Proposal
AARP Kansas said today it is opposed to the proposed settlement agreement announced Monday in the Westar utility rate increase case currently before the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC). The KCC staff and Westar filed a settlement agreement in the $90.8 million Westar rate case that recommends the KCC approve a $50 million increase in Westar rates, including a 10% profit for Westar shareholders. Westar has asked for a 10.6% profit.

[Topeka]-Nearly 9 million Americans 50 and older face the risk of hunger, including 6.5 percent of older Kansas residents according to new research commissioned by AARP Foundation. The report, "Food Insecurity Among Older Adults," found more than nine percent of older Americans were at risk of hunger in 2009-a 79 percent increase since 2001.
