SALVATION ARMY SEARCHES FOR YOUNG HEROES
$5,000 Scholarships for Nebraska Students
Last Call for Nominations
The Salvation Army is seeking nominations for the 2008 D.J.'s Hero Scholarship Awards. Six Nebraska youths, ages 17-19, will be chosen to receive the award, named after D.J. Sokol, for commitment to others and to their community.
Nominations must be postmarked by March 3, 2008 to be eligible for entry. Nomination forms are online at www.givesalvationarmy.org or by contacting Patti Cameli at 402-898-5906. Most Nebraska high school academic counselors also have forms.
Honorees receive a $5,000 scholarship toward their selected college or university. D.J.'s Heroes will be recognized at the D.J.'s Hero Awards Luncheon on May 5, 2008 at Qwest Center Omaha.
Tony Dungy, head coach of the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts, will serve as the keynote speaker at the May 5th luncheon. Dungy, who coached the Colts to the 2007 Super Bowl Championship, will speak about his experiences both on and off the football field, much like in his book "Quiet Strength," which was released in 2007. In his best selling book, Dungy discusses his faith and overcoming the tragic death of his son, James.
Proceeds from the luncheon benefit the Army's programs for children and families.
