John Stoddard Cancer Center Hosts Grand Opening of the New and Improved Adult Oncology Inpatient Unit
John Stoddard Cancer Center hosted a community open house on Friday, February 22 of its newly remodeled Adult Oncology Inpatient Unit at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. The completely renovated unit, located on third floor of the Powell wing at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, boasts many unique new features.
"We are very proud of our new facility as it prepares us to better serve our community for many years to come," said Steve Orazem, RN, nurse manager of the inpatient unit at the John Stoddard Cancer Center. "It is our goal to work with patients to provide the best quality care with exceptional patient outcomes."
Visitors to the renovated unit will have the opportunity to tour the new facility which features:
* Couches that convert to sleeping surfaces for families.
* Lighted handrails for patient's safety.
* A healing garden with a new water fountain.
* Special lighting that illuminates the walkway for night viewing.
* Cancer Help computer to provide up-to-date education from the National Cancer Institute for patients and families.
* A family laundry/shower area to provide amenities for families that choose to stay with their loved one.
* A whirlpool room to provide a soothing spa atmosphere for patients.
* Sound reduction cupboards and drawers.
"The new facility is wonderful for patients and their families," said Orazem. "The new rooms and unit are really geared to help patients and their families to feel more comfortable as they go through treatment."
A family-centered approach is central to the care delivery at the John Stoddard Cancer Center. Their multi-disciplinary team includes, but is not limited to, pharmacy, pastoral care, nutrition services, respiratory care, physical therapy, social services, case management, nursing, surgery and medical and radiation oncology professionals to provide a comprehensive spectrum of care. Their ultimate goal is to give patients and families knowledge, power and confidence as they go through cancer treatment.
