Columbia College honors Stallworth with service award
(COLUMBIA, Mo.) -The Columbia College Alumni Association (CCAA) honored
Ron Stallworth '05, '07 with the 2010 Community Service Award for
demonstrating outstanding leadership and service to the citizens of one's
community. The award ceremony took place on Saturday, April 24, during Reunion
Weekend held on the college's main campus in Columbia, Mo.
"Ron's career accomplishments and service to his community are
impressive," said Susan Davis, senior director of alumni relations. "He is a great example of the caliber of alumni that we have here at Columbia College."
Stallworth is a nationally recognized gang expert and co-chair of the Salt
Lake City Gang Reduction Steering Committee. He enjoyed a 32-year law
enforcement career in Colorado, Arizona and Wyoming, working as a uniformed
patrolman and undercover investigator in vice, criminal intelligence, organized
crime, narcotics and criminal street gangs. He retired in 2005.
Stallworth has received an official commendation from the Colorado
attorney general, two distinguished service awards from the Utah Department of
Public Safety, was instrumental in establishing the Salt Lake City Area Gang Project and was selected to be the state's first and to date only gang intelligence coordinator. He also testified before Congress three times and authored four books on street gang culture and youth violence. In 1998, the National Gang Crime Research Center presented Stallworth with the Frederick Milton Thrasher Award for outstanding contributions to scholarship, service and innovation in gang research.
He has made significant contributions to higher education as chair of the
Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Minority Scholarship and a founding
member of the Pastor France A. Davis Scholarship Fund, a higher education fund
for minority students. He also established the Ron and Micki Stallworth Criminal
Justice Scholarship in honor of his late wife, Micki, at Columbia College-Salt Lake.
He lives in Layton, Utah, and has two sons, Brandon and Nicolas.
The Columbia College Alumni Association honors alumni who have
provided service to Columbia College, their community or have been outstanding
in their professional field. Awards are presented annually as part of the Reunion Weekend celebration held each spring.
