Minnesota Forest Industries launches TreezyDoesIt.com to help K-12 teachers and parents educate young people about forests
Minnesota Forest Industries (MFI), which for more than 30 years has produced educational materials for teachers' use throughout the state, has just launched a new website for Minnesota K-12 teachers and the general public - www.TreezyDoesIt.com
The website includes downloadable Smart Board lessons in English and Spanish that are tied to Minnesota academic standards, and also has videos about careers in the forest products industry and easy ways to order Papermaking Kits, Wood Kits, posters and other materials.
"Teachers throughout Minnesota told us they enjoy our hands-on teaching materials, but that they'd also like those materials as Smart Board applications," said MFI Executive Vice President Wayne Brandt. "So our first app is our popular Trees of Minnesota poster, which identifies the species, their unique properties and where they're found around the state. TreezyDoesIt.com is not only an informative and fun resource for teachers, but parents will also enjoy using it to help teach kids about the trees in their backyards."
Brandt said MFI recently conducted in-depth focus group discussions with K-12 teachers in the Duluth, Mankato and Twin Cities areas to help MFI create materials that are most useful to teachers. He said the most frequent request was to identify the ways in which MFI's materials match Minnesota Department of Education academic standards.
"School teachers have a lot of demands on their time, so we created TreezyDoesIt.com with links for teachers to quickly see how the Trees of Minnesota poster and app fit state standards in science, social studies, math, language arts and art," said Brandt.
He said the website also includes an area for Minnesota teachers to share their own forest-related lessons with other teachers.
Minnesota Forest Industries is an association representing these state forest products companies: Bell Timber, Inc.; Boise, Inc; Hedstrom Lumber Company; Louisiana Pacific Corp.; Minnesota Power; Molpus Timberlands Management, LLC; Norbord Minnesota; Potlatch Land and Lumber; Sappi Fine Paper North America; and UPM, Blandin Paper Mill. MFI members encourage conservation, proper forest management and industry development that foster sound environmental stewardship, multiple use of timber lands and sustainable, long-term timber supply. MFI's web address is www.minnesotaforests.com.
