Columbia College names interim president, search committee

Dr. Gerald T. Brouder, the 16th president of Columbia College, will retire Aug. 1, 2013. Upon his retirement, Dr. Terry B. Smith, currently the Executive Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs, will serve as interim president until the next president of Columbia College is named.

"Dr. Smith will serve as interim president during the 2013-14 academic year," said Grossnickle. "My goal is to have a new president named and on campus by July 1, 2014."

"I was honored and humbled by Daisy's request," said Smith. "It is my pleasure to serve as the interim president for the college until the search committee has ample time to select a replacement."

According to Grossnickle, now is a time to exercise due diligence because Aug. 1st is just 196 days from today.

"Because that's just a little more than six months from now, and because the college is in such a good place, I don't feel the need to rush the search process," said Grossnickle. "I have appointed, and he has accepted, Rev. Dr. John Yonker as chair of the presidential search committee. Rev. Yonker is a long-standing member of the Board of Trustees, and he will direct the search committee to identify a qualified search firm to assist us in selecting the 17th President of Columbia College."

"I am honored to chair the search committee," said Yonker. "Having been a member of the Board of Trustees for many years, I've come to know and love the college. Though, certainly saddened to learn about Dr. Brouder's retirement, we are thankful for the legacy he leaves. Without any debt and with a growing student body, we've achieved national recognition for academic excellence; at this point we're poised for continued growth, and looking forward to finding the right person to lead the college into the next chapter in its history of educating women and men to become responsible citizens and leaders of society."

COLUMBIA COLLEGE INTERIM PRESIDENT BIO
Dr. Terry B. Smith

Dr. Terry B. Smith has served as executive vice president and dean for Academic Affairs at Columbia College since 1996. He says his primary job is "to see that excellent faculty teach rigorous courses to qualified students."

Smith graduated cum laude from Central Methodist College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and minors in English and history. He received both his master's degree and Ph.D. in political science from Michigan State University. He was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to England in 1991 and attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University in 2002.
He is an American politics enthusiast, teaches political science classes at the college and serves as a radio and television election analyst. He gives regular political commentary on a local radio station. Smith has been active in local community and professional organizations and is currently on the Education Committee of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the board of directors of the Paul D. Higday Mozart Music Trust which brings fine classical music performances to mid-Missouri.
Smith and his wife, Jane, have four grown children and six grandchildren.

COLUMBIA COLLEGE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE BIOS

Rev. John Joseph Yonker, Search Committee Chair

A native of St. Louis, Rev. John Yonker received his bachelor's degree from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. He earned a master's degree in divinity from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, Texas, and a doctorate of ministry from Lexington (Ky.) Theological Seminary.

After serving congregations in Cameron, North Kansas City and St. Charles, Mo., Yonker began his ministry at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Columbia, Mo., in 1992. He retired as senior minister after nearly 20 years of service.

Yonker served on the Columbia College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2012 and served on the Educational Policy and Athletic committees, among others.

He also served on the boards of First Christian Church at the local and regional levels, Kiwanis International, Rotary International, the Lenoir Retirement Community and Girls Club of Roswell, N.M., among others. He was president of the Disciples Ministers' Association of Greater Kansas City and Christian Ministers' Institute of the Christian Church.
Yonker and his wife, Sarah, reside in Columbia. They have two sons, David and Thomas, and one grandson, Samuel.


Carol Willoughby Winkler '93

Carol Winkler has served on the Board of Trustees since 2006. She also has served as a volunteer on multiple committees across campus including the Re-Accreditation Committee, Science Initiative Campaign, Athletics Trustee Committee, Reunion Weekend, Homecoming and the Hall of Fame. Winkler has served as Columbia College Alumni 2

Association president and board member. She is a member of the Ivy and Oak Circle of the President's Society.

Originally from Grandview, Mo., Winkler graduated from Columbia College summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business in 1993. She is a Certified Professional Secretary, a designation granted after a rigorous two-day, six-part exam. She is currently a plan administrator at MFA Retirement Plans. She and her husband, Darrell, reside in Columbia. They have two children, Kelly and Shannon.

Anita C. Abbott Timmons '58

Anita Timmons has served on the Board of Trustees since 2007. She is a native of Kokomo, Ind., and graduated from Christian College with an associate's degree. She later majored in English literature at Montclair State University in New Jersey. She received the Columbia College Community Service Award in 1992 and currently serves as convening chair of the Columbia College Tradition Meets Tomorrow campaign. She is a member of the Trustee's Circle of the President's Society.
Timmons has dedicated her life to volunteering and representing organizations such as the Phillips Exeter Academy, the Coastal Symphony of Georgia and the President's Council of Colonial Williamsburg, Va.

Timmons is a former CEO (the owner of a travel company) and primary school educator. She also has experience in the newspaper, insurance and commodities industries. She is now general partner of Taj Enterprises, Investments and resides in St. Simons Island, Ga., with her husband, James.

Col. David M. Randerson

Col. David "Mike" Randerson serves as Vice President for Adult Higher Education. Prior to coming to Columbia College in 1995, he was professor of aerospace studies and department chair of Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps at the University of Missouri.

Randerson spent 25 years in the United States Air Force and served in a variety of positions, including Director of Student Affairs and professor of national security studies at Air University's Air War College. He retired in 1995 in the rank of Colonel.
Randerson graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Illinois University. He majored in political science and minored in Spanish, economics ad aerospace studies. He earned a Master of Arts in international relations with concentrations in U.S. foreign policy and diplomatic history from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Randerson served on the Board of Directors of the Columbia Downtown Rotary Club and the Mid-Missouri chapter of the Military Officers Association. He currently serves as the chairman of the Columbia Memorial Day Salute to Veterans Celebration's Courthouse Ceremony. Additionally, he is a life member of the Air Force Association.

Randerson resides in Columbia with his wife, Carole. Their blended family includes five children and eight grandchildren.

Dr. Brad Lookingbill

Dr. Brad D. Lookingbill is a professor of history at Columbia College. Previous to his academic career, he served in the Army National Guard and Reserve. He was recognized as an Honor Graduate of his Army basic training unit and later graduated with honors from the Primary Leadership Development Course for non-commissioned officers.

Lookingbill earned a bachelor's in education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1991. At the University of Toledo, he obtained a master's in history in 1993 and a doctorate in history in 1995. From 1995 to 1996, he taught classes in American and world history at Independence Community College in Kansas. In 1996, he joined the Columbia College faculty.

While teaching courses on American history at Columbia College, Lookingbill received the Governor's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2002. In 2003, he was selected as a Frederick W. Beinecke Fellow in Western Americana at Yale University. In 2007, he received the Columbia College Trustee's Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2010, he was awarded the Eugene Asher Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Historical Association.
Lookingbill is the author of three books and a contributor to several encyclopedias and journals. He resides in Columbia with his wife, Deidra, his son Augustus, and his daughter Beatrice.

Michael Kateman

Michael Kateman is the executive director of development, alumni and public relations at Columbia College. He is responsible for a full range of fundraising activities such as planned giving, the annual fund, donor relations and capital campaigns. He also directs alumni relations and public relations and is responsible for affinity building and branding for the institution.

Before joining Columbia College in 2006, Kateman worked for 19 years at the University of Missouri. His positions at MU included executive director for arts development and planning and executive director of advancement for the College of Arts and Sciences. He also served as director of gift planning and endowments; director of the Mizzou Annual Fund; director of university events and activities and assistant director of alumni relations.

Kateman was elected to the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning Board of Directors in 2007 and served as chairman of the Board in 2012. He is a member of the Mid-America Planned Giving Council and serves on the board of directors for both the Arrow Rock Lyceum and the Heart of Missouri United Way.
Kateman is a graduate of the University of Missouri, with an master's from the School of Journalism and a bachelor's in business administration. He attended the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

Kateman has two sons, Bradford and William, who are currently students at Columbia College.

George W. Hulett

George Hulett, a trustee since 2009, is president of Hulett Heating & Air Conditioning, which has been in his family for more than 80 years. Growing up in Columbia, Hulett was a baseball star at Hickman High School and later at the University of Missouri, where he captained the 1962 team and lead the Tigers to the College World Series before being signed by the Kansas City A's. He graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in business and accounting.

Hulett is a member of the First Baptist Church and contributes to other organizations including United Way, Habitat for Humanity, the Missouri Symphony Society and the Boone County Historical Society. He's also a season ticket holder for Mizzou football and baseball.

In 1991, Hulett endowed the Hulett Family Criminal Justice Graduate Study Scholarship. He is a member of the Dorsey Chapel Circle of the President's Society.
He is married to Jeannie Hulett; the couple resides in Columbia. Their children, Alan and Joy, graduated from Columbia College in 1984 and 1992, respectively.

Daisy Willis Grossnickle '66, Chair

Daisy Willis Grossnickle has been involved with Columbia "Christian" College since she arrived on campus in 1964. She volunteered as a student recruiter and served on the Alumni Board after earning her associate's degree in 1966. She has served as a Co-Chair for the Annual Campaign and is a Trustee's Circle member of the President's Society.

Grossnickle became a member of the Board of Trustees of Columbia College in 1982 and has served on the technology, facilities and educational policies committees. She served as secretary of the Board, and in 2005 she was elected as the first woman to chair the Board of Trustees. As chair, she currently serves on the executive, finance, Tradition Meets Tomorrow campaign steering and nominating and by-laws committees.

This is the third time Grossnickle has been involved in a presidential search at Columbia College. She previously served on the search committees for Dr. Donald Ruthenberg and Dr. Gerald Brouder. In 1991 she received the Columbia College Service Award from the National Alumni Association.

Grossnickle has extensive experience in the volunteer sector. She is one of the founders of "Mothers of Pre Schoolers," a dynamic program designed to nurture mothers of children from birth to age six in Columbia, Mo., and served in the role of "Titus Woman" as a mentor to young mothers for several years. Grossnickle was instrumental in developing the Memorial Prayer Garden at Missouri United Methodist Church and served as its chair for numerous years. She completed a one-year study program to become a Stephens Minister, a transdenominational Christian education organization that provides training and resources to strengthen and expand lay ministry in a congregation.

Since 1964 she has been a continuous member of the Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia.

Grossnickle's Columbia community service includes: member of Ted Boehm Sheriff's Employee Scholarship Fund, board member of the Country Club of Missouri, board member of the American Cancer Society, vice-president and president of Jefferson Junior High School Parent Teachers Association, past president, Devotional Leader and current member of Margie Rogers King's Daughters Circle. In 2005, Grossnickle was instrumental in establishing Optimus - The Center for Health. Optimus promotes a healthy lifestyle by providing lifestyle guidance based on clinical research in the health & fitness field. She has also been a member of the Institutional Review Board at Boone Hospital Center since 1983.

Grossnickle manages real estate trusts and properties. She is married to Gary "Skip" Grossnickle; they have two daughters, Gayla Grossnickle Miller '90 and Sarah Grossnickle Swindle '96. 5

Patty Fischer

Patty Fischer is the director of human resources at Columbia College, where she has worked since 2006. She additionally serves as an adjunct instructor for the Online, Evening and Day campuses.

Previously, Fischer served as the human resources director at her alma matter, William Woods University. Fisher earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration at the school, which is based in Fulton, Mo.

Fischer is a member of the National Association of Professional Women and the Society for Human Resource Management. She's active in the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources and is a past chair of the Missouri College and University Personnel Association.

Fischer has also worked for Regions Bank, Missouri Patient Care Review Foundation, Boone Hospital and Columbia Regional Hospital. She lives in Fulton with her husband, Donald.

Avery Bourne

Avery Bourne is a junior at Columbia College from Pawnee, Ill. She is majoring in American studies and minoring in history, legal studies and political science. Bourne hopes to attend law school after her anticipated graduation in May 2014.

Bourne, who has made the Dean's list every semester, is the recipient of the Columbia College Scholarship, the Lucinda VanMeter Haynie Scholarship and the Judith A. Cunningham Scholarship. She is president of the Student Government Association and a member of several academic honor societies. Bourne is the founder and chair of Columbia College Republicans and a member of the Tradition Meets Tomorrow and Constitution Day steering committees.

Walter E. Bixby III '82

Walter "Web" Bixby, vice chairman of Kansas City Life Insurance Company, graduated from Columbia College with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1982. He was elected assistant vice president of Kansas City Life in 1985, vice president of marketing in 1990 and president of Old American, a subsidiary, in 1996.

Bixby supports his alma matter as a trustee, fundraiser and director of the J.B. Reynolds Foundation, established by his great grandmother and Christian College graduate Edith (Hulett) Simon '08.

Bixby serves as the national steering committee chair for the Tradition Meets Tomorrow campaign and is a member of the Dorsey Chapel Circle of the President's Society. He has served on the Board of Trustees since 1991.

Bixby is the son of the late Walter E. Bixby Jr., a college trustee emeritus, and the late Mary Martha Musser Bixby '51. Bixby's son, James Philip Bixby, graduated from Columbia College in 2005.

Bixby and his wife, Tracy, reside in Kansas City, Mo.
