Live Healthy Iowa Kids announces K-12 Cup Challenge Participants
A list of schools who are participating in the new Live Healthy Iowa challenge
Ames, IA - The K-12 Cup Challenge was created this year to help build a culture of wellness in schools across Iowa. Schools who wanted to participate in this challenge contacted Live Healthy Iowa and had at least one student team and one staff team participating in the 10 Week Wellness Challenges offered by Live Healthy Iowa and Live Healthy Iowa Kids.
Although a winner has not been decided yet, 41 schools are participating across the state! The winning school will be the school with the highest percentage of participation and completion among their students and staff at their school; the winning school will receive the traveling trophy for the year. Each participating school will receive a banner that states that their school chooses to live healthy. The following are the top 7 districts in the K-12 Cup Challenge:
1. East Sac county CSD
2. Allamakee CSD
3. Grundy Center CSD
4. Mid-Prairie CSD
5. MFL MarMac CSD
6. Jesup CSD
7. Highland CSD
"The K-12 Cup Challenge is a great opportunity for schools to lead by example," said Lisa Weber, coordinator for Live Healthy Iowa, "not only are their staff setting good examples for the students; but the entire school is setting an example for the community and setting the bar high for neighboring schools!"
Throughout the ten weeks, youth will be tracking their physical activity and a nutrition component; there are five nutrition components that will be tracked during two-week time periods. Thus far, kids have reported: 478,766 fruit servings, 723,532 vegetable servings and 26,786,439 physical activity minutes; they have not yet reported their milk, water or screen time. Adults in the 10 Week Wellness Challenge have the option to track either their physical activity minutes or weight loss or both throughout the challenge.
Live Healthy Iowa Kids hit a participation record high this year, in 2013 participation increased by nearly 6,000 for a total near 37,000 kids. On Monday, March 18th, Live Healthy Iowa Kids will be opening registration for Go the Distance Day, a one-day event for schools to get kids active for an additional 30 minutes that day!
