Nuestras Voces (Our Voices) National Bilingual Sexual Assault Conference, in Des Moines April 1 -2

The Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault (IowaCASA) and Arte Sana, are hosting Nuestras Voces, a national bilingual training event. Since 2008, Arte Sana, a national Latina-led nonprofit committed to ending sexual violence, has sponsored Nuestras Voces (Our Voices). The Des Moines event is the first time this national conference has been held outside of Texas. It has been the only national sexual assault conference to offer a complete track en español (in Spanish) to promote the professional development of Spanish/English rape victim advocates and prevention educators.

On April 2nd at 12:45 there will be a workshop performance, Palabras de mujeres migrantes:
Testimonios en acción/ Migrant Women's Words: Testimonials in Action by University of Northern Iowa students, based on Guatemalan migrant women’s testimonials taken in the aftermath of the May 2008 Postville, IA ICE raid. Este taller interactivo concientiza a las asesoras Latinas en como el Marianismo tiene un efecto en su vida diaria. Explorara las conexiones entre el Marianismo y los aspectos culturales, personales y profesionales como mujeres dentro de este movimiento.

The conference will also feature Erin Esteban, Bilingual Family Services Specialist/Dando Voz Coordinator & Juancarlos Santisteban, Bilingual Therapist, with the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center in Renton, Washington; will present Dando Voz: a wrap-around approach to providing trauma-focused therapy, education & legal advocacy to Latino clients and families impacted by sexual assault.

Emiliano C. Diaz de Leon, of 1in6, will offer Proyección y discusión de le película Boys and Men Healing, and other workshops in both Spanish and English will address trauma-focused therapy; the role of art in healing, the correlation of sexual assault and domestic violence, and other topics.

The Folkloric Group "Jóvenes Embajadores" was founded in 2002 by Maria Hilda Ramos and Stacia Watkins for the preservation and promotion of Mexican cultural traditions will perform on Monday evening.

IowaCASA is honored to be a part of bringing this event to Des Moines.
