Iowa Corn Recognizes Individuals and County Groups at Annual Meeting
Aug 30, 2013 - The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) recognized individuals and county groups at their annual meeting on Saturday, Aug. 24 in Des Moines.
Dean Lemke, who is retired from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, was presented with the 2013 Friend of Iowa Corn Award.
Lemke, who is also a farmer, was recognized for being instrumental in crafting a voluntary, science-based nutrient reduction strategy. Because farmers are the primary stakeholders and bear the most costs, he made sure that farmers were involved in the process of drafting the strategy.
"Dean Lemke has always recognized the many variables that farmers deal with from weather to soils and crop and livestock," said Roger Zylstra, a farmer from Lynnville and president of ICGA. "We want to thank him for his many years of service to Iowa agriculture and especially for maintaining a voluntary nutrient reduction strategy that is both practical and achievable."
ICGA Grassroots Awards
Curt Behrends, a farmer from Cass County and Curt Schweers, a farmer from Carroll County were named the 2013 winners of the Iowa Corn Individual Leadership Award. Behrends and Schweers both work tirelessly with the county corn groups and on behalf of ICGA on promotional activities, grassroots efforts and are outstanding local leaders.
