Iowa Public Television's Ready for School Initiative Launches in 25 Communities
Johnston, Iowa - Iowa Public Television is launching a new Ready for School initiative with the goal of working with Iowa communities' efforts to strengthen the math and literacy skills of children ages 2-8. This work is focused on serving children from low-income families. Ready for School communities identified are Belmond, Burlington, Chariton, Clinton, Columbus Community, Davenport, Denison, Des Moines (2), Eagle Grove, Fort Dodge, Hampton, Hawarden, Keokuk, Leon, Marshalltown, Mason City, Muscatine, Oelwein, Osceola, Ottumwa, Red Oak, Shenandoah, Sioux City and West Liberty.
"As our Ready for School staff members are meeting with representatives in selected communities across Iowa, we are finding the community partners to be fully supportive and excited about implementing activities based on IPTV's children's programming designed to increase young children's early literacy and math skills," said Terry Rinehart, director of educational services at Iowa Public Television.
IPTV will provide access to high-quality educational media resources to families, care providers and educators as well as training to support the effective use of those resources. This initiative will use a comprehensive approach to community engagement in 25 communities in Iowa per year to surround children, parents, care providers, and educators with literacy-based content, online games, instructional materials, and educational activities to help children increase their school readiness and success. Community partners such as schools, libraries, preschools, Head Starts, faith-based organizations, care providers and health care providers will all have the opportunity to collaborate in this effort.
The multimedia content and related activities build upon the work of educational children's programming from PBS such as Super Why!, The Electric Company, Martha Speaks, Sid the Science Kid, The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, and Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman. These efforts support learning anytime and anywhere.
This work builds from a proven track record of success in the pilot testing of these methods and resources in Storm Lake, Perry, and Waterloo that Iowa Public Television has led since 2008. This work has been validated by scientifically-based research funded by the U.S. Department of Education. - These efforts are part of Iowa Public Television's Ready to Learn initiative, in partnership with PBS, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Ready to Learn Partnership. Nationally, Ready to Learn is focused heavily on developing programs and resources that help young children build strong pre-reading, reading, and early math skills using scientifically-based research to guide teaching strategies.
