DOANE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR OF MASTER OF ARTS IN COUNSELING PROGRAM
CRETE, Nebraska - Doane College is pleased to announce that it has appointed Dr. Donald Belau as the new Director of the Master of Arts in Counseling Program with the titles of Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Counseling. Dr. Belau, a nationally certified school psychologist and licensed independent mental health provider, is regarded as one of the nation's leading authorities in counseling and psychology.
Dr. Belau comes to Doane after serving 32 years as the Director of Treatment at the Nebraska Health and Human Services' Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Geneva, Nebraska, as well as the School Psychologist for Nebraska Educational Service Unit 6. Dr. Belau also resides on a number of national and state mental health boards and committees, including serving as co-chair of the Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition, co-chair of the Nebraska Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS), Clinical Director of the Lincoln-Lancaster County LOSS team, and Clinical Director and board member of the American Association of Suicidology.
After graduating from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science, Dr. Belau received his Master of Science and Educational Specialist degrees from the University of Nebraska - Kearney before earning a Ph.D. in Physiological & Cultural Studies from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. In 2004, Dr. Belau began serving as an adjunct faculty member for Doane's Master of Arts in Counseling Program.
"We are thrilled that Don has agreed to head the program," says Dr. John Burney, Doane's Vice President for Academic Affairs. "We thank all of the faculty and staff who helped in the search process and who continue to give so generously of their time and talent in working with our MAC students."
While his new role won't officially begin until October 21st, Dr. Belau will begin working with interim director Jean Kilnoski immediately to plan his transition. "I'm excited to work with the faculty, to assess their strengths and receive their input on where they would like this program to go," says Dr. Belau. "We have some really talented people here and the opportunity is there for us to be one of the nation's top programs."
