Trees Forever planting to help green up DeWitt
DeWitt, Iowa (October 10, 2013) - DeWitt continues to green up as 150 students from the high school help to plant trees along Humeston Road. Trees Forever, Alliant Energy, the City of DeWitt, and students from Central High School will plant trees on the public property through the Branching Out program on Friday, October 18 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The public is invited to participate in the planting event.
A total of 60 trees will be planted at the site. Ten shade trees, including northern red oak, Ohio buckeye, and elm will provide shade to future business and residential development. An additional 46 trees will be planted as a windbreak around the perimeter of the site.
Trees help save energy by both keeping communities cooler in the summer through the shading of buildings and built surfaces, and warmer in the winter by breaking up cold winter winds. "Saving energy is important to everyone, and we believe our investment in tree planting and education will help our customers become more aware of the benefits that trees have to offer," said Tom Aller, president of Alliant Energy's Interstate Power and Light. "We care about the communities we serve and welcome the opportunity to help them become more energy efficient."
Emily Swihart, Program Manager and Field Coordinator for Trees Forever, notes that the Branching Out efforts in DeWitt will provide students with a tangible method of impacting the community they call home. "Trees play an important role in our communities and our lives. As these students grow, so will these trees. They will be living reminders of their time at Central High School and maybe one day, these students will return to DeWitt with families of their own and show their children the tree that they planted."
"Trees Forever and Alliant Energy are very excited to support this project, as we know it will provide years and years of beauty and benefits to the community," said Shannon Ramsay, Trees Forever Founding President. "We want to thank our local volunteers for their hard work and their dedication to improving the environment and quality of life in DeWitt. Together, we are planting a better tomorrow."
The planting site is located one block north of E 11th Street on Humeston Road. Volunteers should bring their own shovels to help plant and wear appropriate clothing (sturdy footwear and pants, sun and wind protection.)
The Branching Out partnership between Trees Forever and Alliant Energy has resulted in the planting of more than 1.4 million trees and seedlings in Iowa in the past two decades, for energy conservation and community improvement.
