Couple killed on way to Outback Bowl to be Honored at Green Out Game
Durant, IA January 15, 2014 – Kenneth and Elaine Behrens of Wilton passed away in a tragic motor vehicle accident in Georgia on December 29th. They were on their way to see the Iowa Hawkeyes play in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day in Tampa, FL.
North Cedar will travel to Durant for the 3rd Annual Durant Green Out Basketball Game on January 18th from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at the Durant High School. The Green Out Game is designed to honor organ and tissue donors from the North Cedar-Durant area and promote education and awareness regarding donation. Team members, cheerleaders and spectators from both communities will be wearing green t-shirts specifically created for the event.
A presentation will be held between the boys and girls varsity games (approx. 5pm) to honor those that gave the gift of life. Kenneth and Elaine Behrens will be honored at this time as well. Elaine Behrens received the gift of life in the form of a kidney transplant in 2008 at the UIHC. 2014 Rose Parade Float Rider and Muscatine resident Kim Burdakin will also be speaking at the ceremony.
The event is also a fundraiser for Iowa Donor Network (IDN). Employees from IDN will be on hand to coordinate fundraising, answer questions about donation and help distribute materials.
