Mariners Sail By Johnson 51-35

Visiting Maine Maritime Academy pulled off a tough win over Johnson State in a Saturday afternoon North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest held at Johnson's Carter Gymnasium. Johnson State drops to 4-11 overall and 4-6 in the NAC. The Mariners improved to 9-6 overall and 7-2 in the NAC.

The Badgers were paced by starting forward Kasey DeGreenia, who filled the stat sheet with 7 points, five steals, and five rebounds. Sarah Voorhis chipped in 7 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. Nicole Menard led all Badgers in scoring with 8 points.

The Mariners enjoyed a balanced scoring attack all day long. Rebekah Campbell led the Mariners with a double-double and had a game high 13 points and 11 rebounds. Starters Cheyenne Malloy and Leah Jackson also both chipped in 9 points on the afternoon for visiting MMA.

The Mariners defense took control of this game early as they held the home Badgers scoreless for the first six minutes of play. The defensive battle continued the remainder of the half as MMA held Johnson State to only 14 first half points, while the visitors doubled up the home squad and held a 28-14 half-time lead.

The Badgers scored first to begin the second half on a DeGreenia layup. However, the Mariners through the first six minutes of the second half continued to add to the lead and led by 19 points with 14 minutes remaining in the contest. The Badgers were unable to overcome the deficit and the Mariners coasted to a 16 point victory.

The Badgers will host visiting NAC rival Lyndon State College next Saturday with a 1:00p tip time while the Mariners will host Maine-Presque Isle on Tuesday at 5:30p in a non-conference tilt.
