JOHNSON STATE COLLEGE
Badgers Earn Second Win of the Week
The Johnson State women's basketball team played down to the wire to earn a win over conference foe Me.-Farmington 66-65 at Johnson State College's Carter Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Badgers improve to 7-13 overall and 7-7 in the NAC, while the Beavers slide to 8-14 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
Johnson used a mixture of three-pointers and layups to tame the Beavers, seeing three players netting shots from beyond the arc. Brittany Robertson led the way for the Badgers with a game-high 21 points and three assists while Freshman teammates Ashley Goddard and Domonique Carter-Stanley both pitched in 10 points respectively.
For the Beavers, Lindsay Ranquist led her teammates dishing off 17 points, pulling down nine rebounds and swiping two steals. Teammates Ayla Allen and Kennadi Grover notched 16 and 12 points respectively.
The Badgers fell behind early but fought back and took the lead with a Robertson three pointer at the 10:00 mark in the opening stanza. Johnson slowly built up the lead with solid shooting and getting to the free throw line. The Beavers continued to hang tough but the Badgers were able to take a 34-25 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, both teams traded blows and eventually the game tightened to a one point affair with a jumper from Ranquist. The Beavers' rally fell short in the end with key made free throws from Freshman Goddard to put Johnson ahead by three. The Beavers could not get the needed 3 points to force OT and the Badgers held on for a tough one point win.
The Badgers shot 40.3 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three point range. The Badgers also put up a solid effort from the free throw line, shooting 66.7 percent. The Beavers shot 39.3 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc in their losing effort.
The Badgers will aim to continue their streak as they return to action Tuesday night against non-conference opponent Norwich at 7:00pm at home. Me.-Farmington will look to bounce back as they host Green Mountain College in a NAC contest at home next Friday at 5:30pm.
