Missouri Veterinary Medical Association Holds 122nd Annual Convention
Over 600 veterinarians, veterinary technicians, practice staff and veterinary students attended the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association’s 122nd Annual Convention on January 31-February 2, 2014 at the Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach, Mo. The convention offered 60 continuing education lectures to participants.
Newly installed officers include:

Craig A. Payne, DVM – Board Chair, Columbia, Mo.
Charles L. Barry, DVM – President-Elect, Warrensburg, Mo.
Mel H. Falk, DVM – Vice President, Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Shelia L. Taylor, DVM – Secretary/Treasurer, Springfield, Mo.
Richard D. Antweiler serves as Executive Director
Dana K. Gillig, DVM, Sedalia, Mo. was honored at the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association’s (MVMA) 122nd Annual Convention on February 1 as the recipient of the coveted Veterinarian of the Year Award. Dr. Rodney Chapman, Versailles, Mo. presented the award to Dr. Gillig at the ceremony.
Dr. Gillig is a 1998 graduate of UMC-CVM and owner/practitioner at Sedalia Veterinary Center, a rural mixed-animal practice in Sedalia, Mo.. Dr. She handles large animal work for the practice (predominately cow/calf, dairy, equine, small ruminant, and exotics).
She was past president and past board chair of the MVMA, and is presently a member of the MVMA Emergency Management and Public Health Committee. In addition, Dr. Gillig is past-president of the West Central VMA district, and a member of the AVMA, AABP, Society of Theriogenology, and Academy of Rural Veterinarians. She is actively involved in her church and plays accessory percussion on their Praise Team. She is a Veterinary Science 4-H Leader and a member of the Show-Me Stock Dog Association.
The MVMA Board of Directors selects the Veterinarian of the Year based on the candidate’s contributions to their community, their state, and to people whose lives they have touched.
The MVMA’s annual President’s Award is given to individuals who were instrumental to the President’s efforts to advance the veterinary profession for the betterment of animal health in the state. Dr. Craig A. Payne, MVMA President, presented this year’s award to Shelia L. Taylor, DVM, Springfield, Mo.
Dr. Taylor is secretary/treasurer of the MVMA. She teaches at Ozark Technical College and is a practitioner at Galloway Village Veterinary, Springfield, Mo. She is a 1992 graduate of the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Taylor is a member of the MVMA Recent Graduate and Collegiate Task Force and past member of the Veterinary Technician and Practices Staff Committee.
Bill Jones, DVM, Versailles, Mo. was presented the MVMA’s 2014 Volunteerism Award for his many years of service to veterinary medicine in Missouri and his dedicated work with fire rescue units throughout Missouri. The award was presented to Dr. Jones by William Wolff, DVM.
Dr. Jones is owner/practitioner at Versailles Veterinary Clinic, Versailles, Mo. He graduated from the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine in 1972. He presently serves as chair of the MVMA’s Emergency Management and Public Health Committee and is a member of the Missouri Volunteer Veterinary Corps.
The award is presented for outstanding commitment as it relates to service to animals and their owners in a time of crisis.
Vincil “Mac” Wilt, DVM, Paris, Mo., received the Distinguished Service Award from the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation (MVMF). Dr. Wilt has been a dedicated MVMF volunteer for over 13 years and has helped expand the Foundation’s mission of public education and charitable giving to worthy organizations.
Dr. Wilt is owner/practitioner at Paris Veterinary Clinic, Paris Mo. He graduated from the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. He is past chairman of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation. He received the MVMA’s coveted Veterinarian of the Year honor in 2001.
Richard F. Taylor, DVM received the Honorary Membership Award of the Missouri Academy of Veterinary Practice (MAVP). Dr. Taylor graduated from the University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine in June of 1962 and immediately established his practice in Fayette, MO. He is now in his third facility, Howard County Veterinary Service, P.C.
He is a past president of the MVMA and presently a member of its Animal Welfare Committee. He received the MVMA’s Veterinarian of the Year Award in 1990. He is a past member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Public Relations. He is also a member of the American Association of Swine Practitioners.
MAVP honorary members are individuals who have rendered distinguished or meritorious service to the veterinary profession.

The Missouri Veterinary Medical Association is the society for veterinarians in the state, dedicated to maintaining the highest standards for professionalism and ethics in animal healthcare in Missouri. The association was founded to help the veterinarian better serve the welfare of animals and their owners.
