JOHNSON STATE COLLEGE
Chargers Oulast Badgers 51-42
Colby-Sawyer College earned a hard fought 51-42 win over Johnson State Saturday afternoon at Carter Gymnasium at Johnson State College. The Chargers improve to 15-9 overall and 14-3 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play while the Badgers slide to 7-17 on the season and 7-10 in conference place.
Sarah Voorhis led the Badgers with 13 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Johnson's Kasey DeGreenia finished with six points and six rebounds, while teammate Ashley Goddard also chipped in five points and four rebounds for the Badgers.
Colby-Sawyer was paced by Katie McCarthy who filled the stat sheet with 11 points, three assists, four rebounds, and one steal and one block. She was supported by teammate Jessica Shenkel who also contributed 11 points and served up two rebounds.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after five minutes of play in the opening half. The game was a tight affair in the first half, seeing several ties. Colby-Sawyer took a tight 21-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Chargers never trailed in the second half of play slowly building their lead. Getting to the free-throw line proved to be critical as four made free-throws would put the game away for the visitors. The Badgers tried to chip away at the Chargers' lead, but Colby-Sawyer played solid enough to hold on for the 51-42 victory.
Colby-Sawyer and Johnson State will face off again in NAC quarterfinal action Tuesday evening at Colby-Sawyer. The Badgers will look to avenge the home loss with an upset in the Chargers' house.
