Money Smart Week to help Iowans manage personal finances
DES MOINES, IOWA (March 4, 2014) - Iowans have a chance to improve their financial skills during the eighth annual Money Smart Week taking place across the state on April 5-12. More than 200 financial institutions, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations and community groups will offer a full week of events designed to help consumers of all ages better manage their finances.
"There has never been a better time for Iowans to be smart about managing their money," said Joanne Kuster, chairperson for Money Smart Week Iowa. "Plenty of information exists, but consumers don't know where to turn or who to trust. Money Smart Week points them in the right direction, offering plenty of educational workshops and events. And, no one is going to sell you anything."
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and Money Smart Week Iowa partners are offering about 160 free financial events in communities across the state. One event this year will be held on several college campuses - the GeoCache for College Cash. The winning student will receive $1,000 in college tuition from the Iowa JumpStart Coalition.
Another is the 8th statewide Money Smart Investor Conference is planned for Saturday, April 12, at Drake University in Des Moines. The conference is free to attend, but seating is limited. Complete conference details and registration information is available at www.moneysmartconference.com. Following the conference is the Financial Wellness Expo from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Around the state, partners will host Scout nights and shred days, as well as seminars for adults and school visits with Ben Franklin, the Money Smart Week mascot. Seminar topics range from home-buying basics and money management for kids to retirement planning and investment options for senior citizens. The events - provided at no charge - will take place at banks, credit unions, libraries and local businesses in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Quad Cities, Creston, Harlan, Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, Cedar Falls/Waterloo, and the Sioux City area. Since 2002, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago has been proud to sponsor the economic outreach program, Money Smart Week. "Money Smart Week Iowa's statewide and community-based efforts, as well as its partners' commitment, will make this event a success again this year," Chicago Federal Reserve President and CEO Charles Evans said. "We hope consumers of all ages, including children, will take part in this week's diverse personal finance offerings.
