IOWA SENIOR OLYMPICS NOW THE IOWA SENIOR GAMES

Ames, IA - March 20, 2014 - The Iowa Senior Olympics is joining forces with the Iowa Sports Foundation and is changing the name to the Iowa Senior Games.

Held annually in June in West Des Moines, the Iowa Senior Games is a multi-sport festival that offers competition for those 50 and over.

The Iowa Sports Foundation hosts the Iowa Games, Live Healthy Iowa and Adaptive Sports Iowa. The Iowa Senior Games is a natural fit for both organizations.

"Merging the Iowa Senior Olympics under the direction of Iowa Sports Foundation will provide greater opportunities to Iowa's expanding population of seniors" said Jed Fisk, president of the Iowa Senior Olympics board.

"In addition to the annual Senior Games, the Iowa Sports Foundation will be able to offer its other programs and activities to Iowa's senior population to promote healthy lifestyles on a year-around basis." Fisk added

Doug Reichardt, ISF Board Chair feels "this is one of the more exciting opportunities the Iowa Sports Foundation has undertaken this year. It complements our existing programming and supports our effort to help Iowa become the Healthiest State in the Nation."

Games to stay in West Des Moines

For 27 years the Iowa Senior Olympics has successfully been hosted in West Des Moines, and that will continue.

"It's important that the Iowa Senior Games stays in West Des Moines" said Kevin Bourke Chief Operating Officer for the Iowa Sports Foundation.

"The West Des Moines community embraces the Senior Games and has provided great support through the years. From facilities to volunteers, West Des Moines is a champion for the Senior Games" Bourke added.

In future years, the ISF plans to increase the number of sports offered for seniors, as well as offer regional competitions around the state of Iowa.

The 2014 Iowa Senior Games will be a qualifier for the National Senior Games which will be held in Minneapolis in 2015. Seventy-four Iowans competed in the 2013 National Senior Games.
