Census Bureau Releases County Population Estimates for Iowa

Dallas County is the fastest growing county in Iowa, ranking 17th in the nation in growth among counties according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. Dallas County grew by 12.9% since the 2010 census and added 8,506 residents for a total population of 74,641. The new estimates show 70 of Iowa's counties losing population since 2010. 29 counties have gained residents since the 2010 census.

The latest Census Bureau release also includes population estimates for Iowa's Metropolitan and Micropolitan areas. The fastest growing Metropolitan Statistical Area in Iowa was the Iowa City MSA. This metropolitan area grew by 5.6% since the 2010 census. The Des Moines-West Des Moines metro area saw an increase of 5.3%.

This release from the Census Bureau also included information about births, deaths, and migration in Iowa and its counties. Between 2010 and 2013, Iowa gained 13,282 residents from other nations and lost 3,701 residents to other states for a net migration of 9,581. Among counties, 24 counties experienced more people moving in than moving out and 53 counties recorded more births than deaths since the 2010 census.

Gary Krob, coordinator of the Iowa Library Service's State Data Center program, says that the current estimates show that Iowa's population growth continues to be the strongest in its metropolitan areas. "9 of the top 10 fastest growing counties by the percent change in Iowa are in our metropolitan areas " Krob also noted that if you look at the numeric increases by county, the top 10 increases are all in metropolitan areas.

The new county population estimates, rankings, and components are on the Iowa Library Services-State Data Center web site at http://www.iowadatacenter.org.

These new estimates from the Census Bureau are based on administrative data for births and deaths and estimates of migration since the 2010 census. Caution is urged in making year-to-year comparisons of population estimates. When the Census Bureau releases new estimates for the current year it also revises estimates for previous years in the decade.

The U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program prepared the latest population estimates in partnership with the Federal-State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates. The State Data Center is part of Iowa Library Services and is a member of the Federal-State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates.
