DIOCESE OF DES MOINES
Annual Diocesan Gathering - Chrism Mass - April 11 in Des Moines
Everyone is invited to the annual gathering of the Diocese of Des Moines, the Chrism Mass, on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at St. Ambrose Cathedral. Together, Catholics celebrate their baptismal call to participate in the ministry of Jesus Christ. This is a beautiful celebration of the ways Christ chooses, calls, and heals Christians through the sacraments.
Oils used in sacraments that will be celebrated in the coming year throughout the diocese are blessed at this Mass. Therefore, the Chrism Mass is a perfect opportunity for those who will be celebrating sacraments to be present as the oils blessed. This includes teenage confirmation youth and sponsors, RCIA catechumens and candidates, expectant parents whose children will be baptized and those who struggle with or have overcome serious illness.
In addition, priests renew their commitment to their ministry, and all who attend have an opportunity to consider their own baptismal call to be Disciples of Christ. The celebration will continue with a reception with the bishop, priests, and lay people in attendance.
There are several ways one can participate in the Chrism Mass. Families or individuals can serve as greeters or can help pour the blessed oils from large containers into smaller vessels that are taken back to parishes.
