Silos & Smokestacks Grants Available to Help Share America's Agricultural Story

Northeast Iowa - Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) is pleased to announce $50,000 is now available through the 2014 General Grant Program. Since the program began in 2001, SSNHA has funded over $1.7 million to projects dedicated to telling America's agricultural story, both past and present. By partnering with organizations on a grassroots level, the Heritage Area is able to help share stories that might otherwise be left untold.

General Grants help fund agricultural related interpretive projects in the Heritage Area, including: exhibit development, educational programs, interpretive signage, marketing and event programming. Proposed projects must demonstrate how they interpret America's agricultural stories. Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, local/regional governments or federally recognized Indian tribes with projects located within the Heritage Area. Projects funded through SSNHA Grant Programs must provide a 1-1 non-federal match to the grant award. Grant awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.

"Each year, the grant program draws new and exciting projects," commented Don Short, SSNHA President. "With people's growing interest in where their food comes from, we are finding increased interest in projects sharing the present day agricultural story."

The grant criteria and application are available at www.silosandsmokestacks.org/grants. Applications must be submitted by 12:00 PM CST on June 18, 2014. For more information or questions, contact Candy Streed, Program & Partnership Director, at 319-234- 4567 or cstreed@silosandsmokestacks.org.

SSNHA is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is Affiliated Area of the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and Interstate 35 borders it on the west. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities-past and present.
