Free Hearing Screening Offered At Senior Living Show

WAUSAU, Wis. (May 1, 2014) - Dr. Heather Totman, Au.D., of The Eye Clinic of Wisconsin SC will be providing free hearing screenings at the Senior Living Show on May 8, at The Patriot Center in Rothschild.

"It is a condition that affects everyone, from the individual with the loss to family, friends, and acquaintances. Our ability to communicate affects our quality of life."

Hearing loss affects 38 million Americans. Nearly 80% go undiagnosed. Most individuals with hearing loss can be treated," Dr. Totman said.

The hearing screenings are simple tests that can immediately inform a patient of whether or not they may be in need of a more formal hearing appointment. The screenings will showcase updated technologies, advanced hearing aid options, and provide valuable information on hearing decline and dual sensory loss.

Hearing loss, as noted by Dr. Totman, is the third most prevalent chronic condition in America behind arthritis and hypertension. It contributes to cognitive decline, in diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer's, and can also contribute to a higher risk of falling by decreasing awareness of surroundings.

The Eye Clinic seeks to increase quality of life for its patients by making a hearing screening part of routine eye exams for all those 55 and older. "Vision and hearing are our two most important senses - the two senses that help us navigate our world. They can greatly increase our overall quality of life," Dr. Totman noted.

The Eye Clinic of Wisconsin has provided comprehensive eye care to the residents of Northern and Central Wisconsin for over 50 years. With 12 ophthalmologists, five optometrists and one audiologist, the Eye Clinic provides more than 70,000 patient visits annually at its locations.

The Senior Living Show offers a unique opportunity for active seniors and caregivers to learn about the various products, resources and services available from a variety of companies, government agencies and care providers from throughout the area who will be participating in this event.
