Students to 'Go The Distance' with Live Healthy Iowa
AMES, Iowa - May 1, 2014 - Let's get moving! That's the expectation of Live Healthy Iowa during this year's Go The Distance Day (GTDD) to be held on Friday, May 2. More than 60,000 Iowa youth are registered to take part. The event, which began in 2004, was created to engage Iowa youth in fun, physical activity and educate them on the lifelong benefits of such.
Go The Distance Day is a free, one-day event celebrating active and healthy kids in Iowa. Schools and youth organizations participating are encouraged to engage kids in 30 additional minutes of activity for this event. Registered sites who report completion of the event are eligible to win 1-$1,000 or 4-$500 cash awards to be used toward wellness programs.
Live Healthy Iowa randomly selected a host site to celebrate this year's Go The Distance Day and receive a $500 minigrant. Fellows Elementary in Ames was chosen from over 150 schools and youth organizations. Nearly 500 students,
Kindergarten through fifth grade, will take part in group dancing and a neighborhood walk.
This year, Live Healthy Iowa was also able to support 25 schools through $100 mini-grants for Go The Distance Day activities. These schools, selected through an application process, were located across Iowa.
Although, Go The Distance Day is set for Friday, May 2, Live Healthy Iowa allows schools and organizations to register and report through Thursday, May 8. For more information, or to get registered, visit www.livehealthyiowakids.org.
