IOWA CORN GROWERS ASSN.

Conservation Demonstration for Legislators

JOHNSTON, Iowa - May 14, 2014 - The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Land Improvement Contractors Association (LICA) hosted several state and federal legislators at a conservation demonstration field day on Tuesday, May 13 at the LICA farm located northeast of Des Moines near Melbourne.

"Iowa's nutrient reduction strategy calls for increased adoption of many of the practices found at the LICA farm. It's important for Iowa legislators to understand that water quality benefits extend beyond the farm and voluntary conservation allows for flexibility in fitting the right practices on individual farms," says Roger Zylstra, a farmer and current ICGA President.

Farmers, contractors, and conservation experts discussed with legislators how the practices work, construction, costs, and cost-share programs available. Conservation partners included Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Conservation Districts of Iowa, Agri Drain, and United Suppliers.

Those in attendance for the LICA farm tour included:
* Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture
* Steve King, U.S. Congressman
* Matt Sexton (Congressman Latham staff)
* Amelia Schoeneman (Congressman Loebsack staff)
* Ken Rozenboom, State Senator
* State Representatives Dave Deyoe, Dean Fisher, Mary Gaskill, Stan Gustafson, Dave Maxwell

The LICA farm has a variety of conservation practices placed on an 80 acre farm including wetlands, terraces, sediment control basins, grassed waterways, water control structures, bioreactors, and a rain garden. In addition to touring the farm, educational displays were available in the farm's machine shed.

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) works to develop and defend markets, fund research, and provide education about corn and corn products. The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) is a membership organization lobbying on agricultural issues on behalf of its 7,800 farmer members. Both organizations work on the joint mission to create opportunities for long-term Iowa corn grower profitability.
