IOWA SENIOR GAMES TO FEATURE JUDO DEMONSTRATION
Martial Arts Sport to be a Demonstration Sport at 2015 National Senior Games
WHAT: The 2014 Iowa Senior Games will feature a demonstration of judo to highlight the martial arts sport that will be offered as a demonstration sport at the 2015 National Senior Games Presented by Humana to be held in Minnesota next July. The Iowa Senior Games is a sanctioned qualifying event for athletes 50 and over to compete in the national games.
Post Shredded Wheat, USA Judo and the National Senior Games Association (NSGA), which oversees the largest multi-sport event in the world for adults over age 50, has announced that judo will join the NSGA's roster of demonstration sports at the 2015 Games. Earlier this year, more than 1,800 fans across America voted onlinehttp://www.postshreddedwheatgames.com/ from among five nominated sports and judo was selected to be included as a demonstration sport at the biennial national competition. The promotion was hosted by Post Shredded Wheat in association with NSGA.
The Iowa Senior Games is joining several other states to stage judo demonstrations to educate the public and senior athletes about participation by older athletes in the sport.
Judo has been an Olympic sport since 1964, and USA Judo reports that many adults pursue judo well into their senior years. "The 2013 World Masters Championships hosted by USA Judo in Miami attracted more than 900 adults 30 and older, with many in their 50s, 60s and even some in their 70s and 80s, competing from around the planet," said USA Judo COO, Corinne Shigemoto. "That event was a clear indication of the lifelong love for the sport."
The public can attend and observe the demonstration and all Iowa Senior Games competitions free of charge.
