Iowa Donor Network to promote organ donation through weekend of racing

Newton, IA (July 29, 2014) - NASCAR Nationwide Series driver, and Cedar Rapids native, Joey Gase will be racing at the Iowa Speedway in honor of his mother Mary, who was an organ and tissue donor three years ago. Joey is currently ranked 20th in the series through 16 races. Iowa Donor Network is a primary sponsor of Joey Gase Racing for the Aug. 1st race, which airs on ESPN at 6pm.

"I'm very proud that my mother was able to help so many people by donating her organs and tissues. It has helped my family shine some positive light on what was a hard time for us," says the 21 year-old Gase.

Gase will be featuring a picture of his mother on the hood of his #52 racecar. Jeff Bailey, an organ donor from Des Moines, will have his picture next to Joey's mom. Several members of the Gase and Bailey families will be attending the race.

Iowa Donor Network is also hosting an event on Friday, Aug, 1st at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids. Racing fans will be able to talk with employees and register on site to be a donor. As an added attraction, Joey Gase will make a special appearance in the late model racing series that evening.

"It's really special for me to race at Hawkeye Downs again. That's where I launched my racing career, it's a special place to me." Gase will be signing autographs prior to the race. Brian Gibson, whose wife was a donor in 2008, will also be racing in the modified division.

On display at both races will be a replica of Gase's NASCAR Nationwide Series #52 car, a go cart built in part by 5 year-old fan Milo Hakes. Hakes and Gase took the car for a practice drive last week and younger fans will be able to sit in the go cart for pictures.
