Link News: IBA Chooses Steer for Governor's Charity Steer Show

JOHNSTON, IOWA (July 31, 2014) -The Iowa Bankers Association (IBA) recently announced its selection of a steer for the upcoming Governor's Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. Now in its 32nd year, the Steer Show highlights the accomplishments of young producers by having Iowa celebrities show the steers at the fair. All proceeds of the show benefit the Ronald McDonald House charity in Iowa.

The IBA has sponsored a steer for the show every year since 1985. "Iowa banks and Iowa livestock producers have worked together for generations to promote and grow the Iowa agricultural economy. Promoting the achievements of young producers is a natural extension of that partnership," said Mick Guttau, chair-elect of the IBA and chairman of Treynor State Bank. "Having been a young producer myself, I also personally appreciate the hard work and commitment of these young producers and value their participation in 4-H and showing livestock."

IBA Vice President Agriculture Lending Don Foley has been personally involved in the selection of the steer for the past 14 years. "I'm extremely proud to be a part of this event, and I think we have another competitive steer and a wonderful family to represent the IBA," he said.

The Angus steer selected weighs approximately 1,345 pounds and has been shown at several shows this year. It was raised by Tanner Knupp in Washington, Iowa, and he and his family couldn't be more excited to have their steer chosen for such a worthwhile event. "It is a great honor for us to be chosen, and we hope to help raise significant funds for a very worthy cause," said Knupp.

Foley hopes the steer he selected will do as well as previous years. Two years ago the IBA steer named, "The Big Show," brought an all time sale price of $30,000. The steer was shown by Mike Pearson and Betsy Pearson, two of the children of the late Mark Pearson, a popular Iowa personality who appeared on both WHO Radio's The Big Show and Iowa Public Television's Market to Market. Mike and Betsy plan to show the IBA steer again this year.

"It is a huge honor to continue Dad's legacy by showing the IBA steer in the Governor's Charity Steer Show. The show is a wonderful way of highlighting so much of what makes Iowa great: top-quality agriculture, teamwork between the sponsors, families, and exhibitors and, of course, a willingness to lend a hand to those in need," said Mike Pearson.

In 2013, total overall donations from the show surpassed $2.6 million raised for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill children. "This show is one of the most rewarding experiences and memorials I have been a part of and there aren't words to express my gratitude to be tied to such a great association, like the Iowa Bankers and an incredible cause like the Ronald McDonald House charity," said Betsy Pearson.
