Link News: IA Commercial Casinos to Hold Responsible Gaming Education Week August 4-8

"Getting to Know Responsible Gaming" is the theme

The 17th annual Responsible Gaming Education Week (RGEW) will be held at the 18 Iowa Commercial Casinos August 4-8. A theme of "Getting to Know Responsible Gaming" is intended to get the community, patrons and staff more aware of ways to assure a visit to a casino is a fun worthwhile entertainment experience.

Enclosed with this release is an RGEW Proclamation issued by Governor Branstad that further promotes the importance of this event and the activities that will take place.

"Responsible Gaming is something the casino members focus on throughout the year," says Wes Ehrecke, President & CEO of the Iowa Gaming Association; "during RGEW there is a heightened integrated effort to involve the staff, patrons and gambling treatment counselors with several activities and plans for training tailored to each location."

"Consistent research shows that over 98% of the people who go to a casino can do so responsibly with a budget of their discretionary dollars earmarked for entertainment" said Ehrecke. Also, for any persons experiencing problem gambling, we want to have the resources available to properly help; plus make sure there is a strong awareness of the 800 Bets Off Help Line."

During the week, casino employees are encouraged to make a personal connection with responsible gaming by promoting a proactive message and have ongoing conversations at home, on the job and in the community.

Each casino property will also work closely with their area gambling treatment provider by extending an invitation to display their brochures, interact with patrons and conduct training programs to teach employees to approach or come to the aid of those exhibiting compulsive behavior, and learn warning signs and intervention skills.

The Code of Conduct for Responsible Gaming is a helpful internal tool to support each casino's company-wide support and commitment for responsible gaming. During RGEW, it is reviewed by casino staff to assure proactive initiatives and any new resource ideas are being incorporated into their property's best practices throughout the year.

"I encourage people to visit our website www.iowagaming.org under the Responsible Gaming section to find several worthwhile resources. Iowa has been recognized nationally for having a proactive treatment, prevention and awareness program, and it is imperative to keep it that way," Ehrecke said. "The bottom line is that going to a casino is intended to be a fun experience. We want people to always remember to use their discretionary budget wisely and to bet with their heads and not over it."
