Iowa Bankers Association Governor's Charity Steer Wins Peoples' Choice Award at the Iowa State Fair and Raises $29,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities

JOHNSTON, IOWA (Aug. 13, 2014) - This weekend, the Iowa Bankers Association's sponsored State Fair steer won the "Peoples' Choice Award" during the Governor's Charity Steer Show - and raised a record-breaking $29,000 when sold to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

"This breaks the all-time record sale for the 34 years the Iowa Bankers Association has participated in the show," said Don Foley, vice president of agriculture lending for the Iowa Bankers Association. "All proceeds of the show benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Iowa, and it is an honor to be able to help support such a worthwhile cause."

The award-winning Angus steer weighed approximately 1,345 pounds, and was raised by Tanner Knupp, who with his parents Jackie and Zues Knupp, lives in Washington, Iowa. Foley selected Knupp's steer for this year's show, and has been personally involved in the selection of the Iowa Bankers Association's sponsored steer for the past 14 years.

"It has been a pleasure working with the Knupp family this year," added Foley. "They are a wonderful family and had many friends from their area in Washington County who supported the steer very well. There were over 50 families from the Washington County area at the show. All in all it was a very successful show."

This year's show raised a total of $225,000 for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. In 2013, total overall donations from the show surpassed $2.6 million. All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill children.

The Iowa Bankers Association has sponsored a steer for the show every year since 1985. "Iowa banks and Iowa livestock producers have worked together for generations to promote and grow the Iowa agricultural economy. Promoting the achievements of young producers is a natural extension of that partnership," said Mick Guttau, chair-elect of the association and chairman of Treynor State Bank in Treynor, Iowa.
