Through Awareness, We Can Prevent Suicide

Southwest Iowa Mental Health & Disability Services Region is focusing on suicide awareness during National Suicide Prevention Week.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA (Aug. 27, 2018) – In 2016, more than 450 people completed or died by suicide in Iowa – a 14.6 per 100,000 population mortality rate, which is 1.1 percent higher than the U.S. suicide rate of 13.5 per 100,000. Southwest Iowa Mental Health & Disability Services Region (SWIA MHDS) wants everyone to know that suicide is preventable and that many people find talking can alleviate painful suicidal thoughts and feelings. While the organization is dedicated to informing communities about the importance of suicide prevention every day of the year, it will increase efforts during National Suicide Prevention Week, Sept. 9 through Sept. 15.

These efforts include sharing the resources available through the SWIA MHDS HOPE4IOWA Crisis Call Line, which connects individuals in crisis to trained counselors who provide resources to address and help improve mental wellness. The helpline is available 24/7.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a suicide occurs every 12 minutes in the United States, making it one of the nation’s top 10 leading causes of death. In addition, suicide rates are higher and growing in rural areas than in urban areas, and the gap has been widening more quickly since 2007.

In Iowa, suicide is the No. 9 cause of death.

“It is the vision of SWIA MHDS to serve the residents of our region by filling gaps in human services,” said Sonya Fittje, M.S., LMHP, the clinical supervisor at the HOPE4IOWA Crisis Call Line. “Suicide can be prevented with multiple strategies that include comprehensive ways to help Iowa residents increase their access to various informal and formal supports.”

Fittje said there are many suicide warning signs and by recognizing individuals at higher risk, each one of us can help prevent suicide. “Some signs might include talking about death or dying, significant changes in eating and sleeping habits, social withdrawal from friends and family, losing interest in activities, substance abuse, uncontrolled anger or agitation and increased risky behaviors,” Fittje said.

The HOPE4IOWA Crisis Call Line was established to improve mental wellness, hope and outcomes for residents of southwest Iowa in times of crisis. Anyone can call the helpline phone number at 844-673-4469.
