Trees Forever Honors UpCycle Stewards for Outstanding Work
IOWA CITY, Iowa (August 28, 2018) – Trees Forever recognizes UpCycle Stewards with the Outstanding Group Award. Callie Le’au and Josh Dewes, both with the City of Des Moines, accepted the award upon the group’s behalf during the Iowa City Annual Celebration and Award Dinner on June 13 at the Celebration Farm (located at 4696 Robin Woods Lane NE, Iowa City).
UpCycle Stewards is a collaboration with Trees Forever, Blank Park Zoo, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department. This program trains volunteers to identify and remove invasive species, such as garlic mustard and honeysuckle, and then those plants are fed to animals at the zoo. Additionally, there are many projects that Trees Forever works to achieve in the Des Moines area and these entities have been extremely supportive of the organizations work.
“The City of Des Moines, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and Blank Park Zoo have all been extremely supportive of tree projects,” Trees Forever Program Development and Innovation Director Leslie Berckes said. “I know that if I call upon these entities, they will step up to support trees and green space in the community and Trees Forever overall.
“Every year, Trees Forever recognizes outstanding volunteers, environmental stewards, partners and advocates at Trees Forever’s Annual Celebration and Awards Dinner.
“Every one of our volunteers and landowner has made a brighter, greener future for the next generation, but these awards recognize the most outstanding-those who truly exemplify the Trees Forever mission.” Trees Forever CEO and Found President Shannon Ramsay said.
The nonprofit engages an average of 7,000 volunteers every year and has more than 500 sites on farms and other lands to enhance water quality, pollinator and wildlife habitat.
