WATERLOO, Iowa (January 8, 2026) – Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) has announced that Candy Streed has been appointed Managing Director, effective Feb. 1. Streed brings more than 25 years of heritage development experience and a deep commitment to preserving and sharing Iowa’s agricultural story.
A native of Maquoketa, Streed’s journey with Silos & Smokestacks began in 1994, when she joined the AmeriCorps Program and was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It was during that service that she discovered her passion for heritage work and began what would become a lifelong career with Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area.
Currently serving as Director of Partnerships, Streed has played a critical role in advancing the organization’s mission across its 37-county region. She oversees funding programs, heritage area sites, interpretation initiatives, historic preservation efforts, and technical assistance, working closely with communities and partners to preserve and share their agricultural stories.
“Candy’s leadership, institutional knowledge, and dedication to our mission make her the ideal person to step into this role,” said Executive Director Cara Miller. “She has an extraordinary ability to connect people to place and history, and her work has strengthened Silos & Smokestacks and our sites in lasting ways.”
This leadership transition comes as Executive Director Cara Miller prepares to retire at the end of January 2026, concluding a decade of service to the organization.
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 62 federally designated National Heritage Areas in the United States and is a member of the National Park Service National Heritage Area System. Covering 37 counties in Northeast Iowa, SSNHA works with sites, communities, and partners to preserve and share the nationally significant story of American agriculture.
