WATERLOO, Iowa (June 30, 2025) — Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) is proud to announce the launch of its new Junior Ranger Program, an engaging and educational initiative designed to inspire youth to explore, learn, and protect America’s agricultural heritage.
The Junior Ranger Program invites children and families to participate in hands-on activities at designated partner sites throughout the 37-county heritage area. Participants will complete a specially-designed Junior Ranger folder filled with interactive activities focused on farming, rural life, and the innovative spirit of America’s Heartland.
“This program is an exciting way to connect the next generation to the powerful stories of agriculture, industry, and community that shaped our region,” said Laura Elfers, Director of Educational Engagement at SSNHA. “By becoming Junior Rangers, kids don’t just learn — they become active stewards of our living history.”
Participants of the program could earn either a Junior Ranger patch or badge dependent upon their level of involvement. Completion of the program symbolizes their role in preserving and sharing the rich legacy of agriculture in the Midwest.
The Junior Ranger folders are available at SSNHA Headquarters in downtown Waterloo. It is free of charge and open to children of all ages, with special emphasis on youth ages 6–12.
