DES MOINES, Iowa (February 17, 2026) – As conversations around water quality continue across central Iowa, a local Des Moines water treatment dealer is encouraging homeowners to take a proactive, informed approach to understanding what is in their drinking water-and what options exist to address it.
Recent public discussions have focused on nitrates in water supplies across agricultural regions of the Midwest. While public water systems are regulated and required to meet federal standards, many residents are choosing to learn more about their household water and explore additional point-of-use treatment options for drinking water.
“Our goal is not to create fear, but to provide clarity,” said a representative from the local Kinetico dealer. “People deserve transparent, science-based information about their water and the technologies that are available to help reduce certain contaminants.”
Certified Performance for Nitrate Reduction
One option available to Des Moines homeowners is the Kinetico K5 Drinking Water Station, a point-of-use reverse osmosis system designed specifically for drinking water applications.
According to independent testing and certification by the Water Quality Association (WQA), the Kinetico K5 is certified under NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for the reduction of nitrate and nitrite when operated under defined conditions. Laboratory testing showed an average nitrate/nitrite reduction of 91.2%, reducing influent levels to below the EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for treated drinking water.
A Supplemental Approach to Drinking Water Confidence
The Kinetico K5 is installed at the kitchen sink and is intended to treat water used for drinking and cooking. Like all certified treatment systems, actual performance can vary depending on incoming water quality, system maintenance, and operating conditions. Kinetico recommends periodic water testing to verify ongoing performance, particularly when nitrate reduction is a treatment objective.
“We always encourage homeowners to start with water testing,” the dealer added. “That allows families to make decisions based on real data, not headlines.”
Focus on Education, Not Alarm
The dealer emphasized that certified home water treatment systems are not a replacement for public water infrastructure, but rather a supplemental option for households that want an additional layer of treatment for their drinking water.
“Our role as a local dealer is education,” the representative said. “We help customers understand what their water contains, what standards exist, and what technologies are certified to reduce specific contaminants-so they can make confident, informed choices.”
