WATERLOO, Iowa (November 10, 2025) — Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) is proud to announce Montauk Historic Site in Clermont, Iowa, as the winner of the 2025 People’s Choice Site of the Year award.
The People’s Choice award celebrates heritage area sites that demonstrate exceptional commitment to preserving and sharing America’s agricultural story. Each year, the public is invited to vote for their favorite partner site that provides engaging programs, authentic interpretation, and meaningful visitor experiences.
Montauk Historic Site, home of Iowa’s 12th governor William Larrabee, was recognized for its dedication to interpreting the life, legacy, and agricultural vision of the Larrabee family through educational programming and community partnerships.
Also earning recognition as top-three finalists were the African American Museum of Iowa (Cedar Rapids) and the Kinney Pioneer Museum (Mason City).
“Montauk Historic Site exemplifies what it means to connect past and present through storytelling,” said SSNHA Executive Director Cara Miller. “We’re honored to celebrate their contributions to Iowa’s agricultural heritage and thank all who participated in this year’s voting.”
The award was announced during the Golden Silo Awards Luncheon held as part of the Heritage Area Site Annual Training on Nov. 6.
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area, one of 62 federally designated heritage areas in the nation, partners with sites across northeast Iowa to tell the story of American agriculture — past, present, and future. For more information, visit www.silosandsmokestacks.org.
