WATERLOO, Iowa (May 30, 2025) — Families are invited to join Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) June 13 for its first ever Farm Story Friday, a free, twice-monthly program designed to spark curiosity and imagination through farm-themed stories and hands-on learning.

Held every other Friday from 10-10:30 a.m. at the Silos & Smokestacks Headquarters located at 305 West Park Ave. in Waterloo, Farm Story Friday offers a welcoming and educational environment for children ages 2–7 and their caregivers.

Each session includes:

  • A farm-related children’s book read aloud
  • A themed activity sheet to take home
  • Engaging interactive activities to explore onsite

“Farm Story Friday is a wonderful way to connect children with the heritage area and stories of America’s agricultural heartland,” said SSNHA Executive Director Cara Miller. “It’s not only fun but helps foster early literacy and a sense of pride in our community and state.”

Each Friday will have a theme with corresponding books and activities. Attendees will also learn about sites and attractions they can visit that relate to the story time theme. No registration is required and all are welcome to attend.

The Farm Story Friday schedule includes:

  • June 13: Cows
  • June 27: Pioneers/Laura Ingalls Wilder
  • July 11: Tractors
  • July 25: Corn
  • Aug. 8: Theme: Plants
